The Super Bowl is just weeks away and as it approaches there may be a whole lot of party menu planning going on. Unfortunately not every family in the Houston area will be planning party foods.
The Souper Bowl of Caring is an annual event from Jan. 16, 2013 - Feb. 3, 2013 where food and funds donations are collected to fight hunger and poverty in our community. During this event you can contribute in a variety of ways:
- donate canned goods when shopping at stores like HEB, Krogers and Randall's.
- donate money.
- attend local events designed to benefit Souper Bowl of Caring.
- donate to Boy Scout troops as they go door to door.
- volunteer and participate at local area grocery stores and charitable organizations. Get your group together and see what can be done.
This particular event donates 100% of the collections, both food and funds.
Souper Bowl of Caring began as a simple youth group project in South Carolina in 1990 and has grown into a national movement uniting people of all ages and backgrounds to use the time around the Super Bowl to fight hunger and poverty. In 2012, the Houston program generated enough food and money to provide more than 3.2 million meals—more than any other city in the U.S.
Of the 137,000 different people who receive food assistance each week in our area: Nearly half of households include at least one working adult, 94% are not homeless, and 47% are children, according to the Houston Food Bank Hunger Report. This year get the whole family involved at City Centre hosts a very special Souper Bowl of Caring event. On January 25th, CITYCENTRE gets in on the game with a community food drive from 4 until 8 pm. Guest can expect a variety of festive activities, such as an inflatable football toss, hourly giveaways from 104.1 KRBE, goodie bags, raffle tickets and special appearances and photographs will be available with some of the Houston Texans Cheerleaders and the Texans’ mascot, Toro. Additionally, the Houston Texans Grille will be grilling pork sliders for $1 donations.
Souper Bowl of Caring 2012 raised $2,431,022 in food and monetary donations. Souper Bowl of Caring Houston is supported by the Houston Texans along with the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation and is partnering with competing food retailers H-E-B, Kroger and Randalls Food Markets; leading TV stations KPRC Local 2, Channel 11 KHOU-TV/DT, ABC 13, KRIV Fox 26 and KTXH My 20, Channel 39, KXLN Univision 45, KFTH TeleFutura 67, and; local radio stations 89.3 KSBJ FM, NGEN Radio, Sunny 99.1; NewsRadio 740 KTRH and SportsRadio 610 AM; the Houston Chronicle; CultureMap Houston; the Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts; Papa John’s Pizza; the City of Houston Volunteer Initiatives Program, the Mayor’s Citizen’s Assistance Office and the Mayor’s Youth Council; and more than 250 area schools and congregations.
