Soundgarden began their three night sold out stand at The Wiltern, on Feb. 15.
Kim Thayil is the guitarist, Matt Cameron is the drummer, Ben Shepherd is the bassist and Chris Cornell is the lead vocalist and guitarist of Soundgarden. Cameron and Shepherd also provided backup vocals.
Before the start of Soundgarden’s set, the logo of “Badmotorfinger” appeared on the projection screen. The spikey spiral surrounding the triangle rotated in a clockwise motion, as Soundgarden arrived on stage. Cornell waved to the spectators, as he walked across the stage. They began their set with “Searching With My Good Eye Closed”.
Cornell gave a brief introduction, before “My Wave”. He mentioned how it was originally about leaving his possessions alone and to let everything be. It went onto be featured in the 2004 film, “Riding Giants”.
Shirts were thrown onto the stage, on two separate stints. Before “Fresh Tendrils”, Cornell asked who threw the shirt on stage. An 11-year-old raised his hand and was brought on stage. He was celebrating his birthday. Cornell asked if he had any earplugs in his ears, checked for him and he did. He applied a pair of headphones on him and asked if he wanted to stay on stage with Soundgarden. He declined and Cornell complimented by telling him how smart he was. Another was thrown, before “Mailman”.
Cameron appeared on stage first, as the rest of Soundgarden prepared for the encore. He asked if the audience had fun during the first set, said they could play all night long and the crowd cheered. Later, the rest of his band mates accompanied him for “Outshined” and he provided backup vocals.
“Slaves and Bulldozer” and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “In My Time Of Dying” brought the first night to an end. As the sound continued through the speakers, members of Soundgarden departed the stage after another. In true Rock star form, Shepherd smashed his bass and shattered it on the stage. He pushed over a speaker cabinet and jumped on it, as the crowd cheered.
“Attrition”, “Let Me Drown”, “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Spoonman”, “By Crooked Steps”, “Rhinosaur”, “Taree”, “Been Away Too Long”, “Worse Dreams”, “Pretty Noose”, “Burden In My Hand”, “A Thousand Days Before”, “Black Saturday”, “Blow Up The Outside World”, “Fell on Black Days”, “New Damage”, “Superunknown”, “Live to Rise”, “Non-State Actor”, “Like Suicide”, “Rusty Cage” and “Dusty” were also part of Soundgarden’s set.
