Sounders' Marshall lays down the law in 1:1 draw with Chicago

Tyrone Marshall was not only great in the back of the Seattle defense but also scored the late goal that gave Sounders FC a 1:1 away draw in Chicago Saturday night.

The Fire dominated the first half of the match with numerous scoring chances and seven shots on goal. The Fire hit the post on a dart by Patrick Nyarko in the 20th minute.

Seattle escaped the first half and seemed to be reorganizing early in the second when forward Fredy Montero was red-carded for throwing an elbow in the 49th minute. The Sounders played with ten men the rest of the way.

Finally in the 68th minute Chicago took a deserved 1:0 lead when Cuauhtemoc Blanco passed to Marco Pappa for a shot that scooted past a diving Kasey Keller. It was the first goal scored against Keller in MLS.

It appeared Chicago would get the win but only six minutes later sub. Sebastien Le Toux hustled down the right flank and earned a corner kick. The ensuing try was headed by a crowd at the near post and landed at the left foot of Tyrone Marshall, who reacted as it fell and poked home the drawing score. It was the first ever 'set play' goal for Seattle.

Chicago fought for the home win from then on, but the Sounders were able to steal a point on the road on a night where Marshall did it all, and the club played poorly but fought bravely.

It was the first-ever draw for Seattle Sounders FC, who move their record to W-4 D-1 L-2 on the season with standings 13 points. Chicago are stuck in neurtral after their fifth draw in seven matches.

COMMENTARY: LUCK FALLS SOUNDERS' WAY, BUT WHAT TO DO WITH MONTERO?

Sounders FC is off to the best start by an MLS expansion team. It has now gone undefeated (2-0-1) in its last three games overall and returns home to host the L.A. Galaxy on May 10. The Fire has tied its last four in a row.

Marshall’s goal, the first in two years by the central defender, came from close range as his outstretched left foot poked home a corner kick from Freddie Ljungberg. It was Ljungberg’s first MLS assist and it was also Seattle’s first goal off a set piece this season.

Pappa’s goal was a first-time hit following a pass by Cuauhtemoc Blanco from the right side of the box. It was Pappa’s third goal of the season and the first goal allowed by Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller after a record 456 scoreless minutes to begin the season.

Montero was ejected after his elbow struck Chicago’s Gonzalo Segares as the two battled for a header. Montero will miss Seattle’s next match.

Keller made four saves as Chicago finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots, including 5-1 on goal.
