Sounders 'kids' kick off their seasons with a draw, win

SUNDAY October 3: Sounders FC Academy teams v. San Diego Surf, Starfire, 10:30 (U-18) & 1:00 PM (U-16)

While the "big" Sounders were beating Toronto FC 3:2 before over 36,000 fans at Qwest Field the Sounders Academy teams were down at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila playing their first-ever USSDA matches against Nomads SC.

In the opener the Sounders U-18's dominated but ended up in a 0:0 draw. The second match saw the U-16 Sounders edge the Nomads 2:1.

Chris Coulter was at the U-18's match and shares both photos and observations with Seattle Soccer Examiner. He also adds more in the GOALSeattle.com forums here.

1st half: Seattle looked to be the more talented team and definitely the more physical.  However, Seattle failed to control possession and allowed the opposition to control possession much of the 1st half, despite being the weaker team.  Ryan Herman made a couple of nice saves in the 1st half including a 1v1 with the attacker in the box.

For my money, Palodichuk and Darwin Jones were the players of the 1st half for the Sounders—they were pressing forward and seemed to cause the most problems for the opposition.

2nd half: Seattle came out flying and dominated possession and their talent definitely proved to be too much to handle.  Unfortunately they were unable to get a goal.  Jamael Cox was far and away the best player of the 2nd half and caused all sorts of problems.  Seattle were unlucky to not score with a number of chances inside the 18. ---Chris

I think that there is another local academy team that is getting coverage. Crossfire U18 came away with a win and a tie against the same teams.......scored 5 goals.
