Mondays nationally televised (ESPN2 7p.m.PST) match between Seattle Sounders FC (12-4-2,38pts) and the LA Galaxy (7-4-6,27pts) will be a colossal battle for supremacy in MLS Western Conference.Cue up the soundtrack and characters from Tombstone, Arizona's storied clash, between the Clanton's and Earp’s and you have the context for Monday’s Wild West show down between MLS top two teams.
Over the last five-and-a-half seasons, no teams have outperformed Sounders FC and the LA Galaxy. Since Seattle entered the league in 2009, the Galaxy has posted a record of 87-45-47 for 308 points, just four points ahead of Seattle’s record of 86-48-46 for 304 points.
The fact that the two teams have eight players named to next month’s MLS All Star game in Portland and will show case those eight All-Stars on Monday is a testament to the two franchises dominance in MLS. While there will be no real guns involved in Monday’s shootout between the heated rivals, fireworks, games man ship and a little chicanery can be expected.
“This is a game that they circled on their calendar. It’s an important game for them. It’s an important game for us,” Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid said. “They’re hard-fought, intense matches. There have been blowouts, but most of the games have been tight and competitive.”
After having its recent eight games unbeaten streak snapped by Kansas City, LA will look to MLS All-Stars Omar Gonzales, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane to quickly regain its swagger against MLS top team.
Keane’s finishing ability in the box and space creating runs for Donovan and lethal finisher Gyasi Zardes will make for a hard day’s work for MLS All-Stars Chad Marshall, DeAndre Yedlin, Osvaldo Alonso and the rest of the Sounders FC back line. Omar Gonzales return to the Galaxy backline will be a major boost to an already stingy defense. The Galaxy has MLS third- best goals against average.
Sounder FC high powered offense led by MLS All-Star’s Clint Dempsey and Obefami Martins will look to come down main street and take aim at the heart of the LA defense by having Lamar Neagle and Marco Pappa hugging the touchlines and creating space so puppeteer Gonzalo Pineda can feed them the ball. Seattle has scored a league high 35 goals. Sounders FC have won six consecutive home games and their defense has allowed the fewest home goals in MLS and have kept the opposition scoreless in the past 344 minutes of action at Century Link Field.
