Immediately after the Sandy Hook tragedy, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced a plan to honor those brave souls killed in the tragedy on Sunday, Jan. 20. However, in respect to the community, the Sound Tigers announced today that the event will now take place on Saturday, Apr. 6., against their in-state arch-rivals, the Connecticut Whale.
“After speaking with members of the Newtown community in recent weeks, we’ve been asked to honor those lost and their families later in the season,” Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan said. “We want to respect the community’s wishes during this difficult time, and we look forward to hosting them on a very special night in April.”
In memory of the 26 lives lost, the Sound Tigers are wearing commemorative green ribbons and helmet stickers, a tribute that will remain for the entire 2012-13 season. The players also honored the 20 children lost by each wearing the last name of each child on the back of their jerseys—in place of their own names—on Dec. 22 in a game played against the Adirondack Phantoms. The players will present these commemorative jerseys to those families or representatives of those families following the game on April 6.
The Sound Tigers return to action with a pair of games this weekend at Webster Bank Arena. On Saturday night, the Tigers host the Binghamton Senators at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, they will entertain the Springfield Falcons. First puck drops at 3:00 p.m. For information call the Sound Tigers at (203) 334-GOAL or e-mail info@soundtigers.com.
