Sotnikova to challenge Kim for Olympic women's figure skating gold

According to the Sochi 2014 website, Yuna Kim of South Korea will experience a stiff challenge in the women's free skate at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi on Thursday.

That is because after the women's short program, Adelina Sotnikova of Russia is only .28 points back of Kim in second place and Carolina Kostner of Italy, the 2012 women's world figure skating champion who is only 0.8 points back in third place.

The fact that Kim and Kostner are near the leaderboard should come as no surprise, but the fact that Sotnikova is in contention is. That is because Sotnikova's teammate, Yulia Lipnitskaya was expected to be a medal contender after her fine performance at Skate Canada this past October in Saint John, New Brunswick.

But on Wednesday, it was Sotnikova that was carrying Russia's colours after successfully executing her triple toe loop combination and triple flip. High praise also needs to go to Examiner reader anibeth1 who successfully predicted that Sotnnikova would be a medal contender when I made by Olympic figure skating predictions on January 18.

Meanwhile, Kaetlyn Osmond of Marystown, Newfoundland is in 13th place and Gabrielle Daleman of Toronto is in 19th place.
