Sing with Haiti is a non-profit organization based here in San Francisco. Its primary mission is to raise funds and resources to support the efforts to rebuild the Holy Trinity Music School in Haiti’s capital city, Port-au-Prince. The school was, for all intents and purposes, completely destroyed by the massive earthquake on January 12, 2010, which brought to ruin an institution that had educated thousands of children in formal classical music for over 50 years. However, if the physical facility was no more, the spirit behind the school sustained. The students never stopped playing; and the faculty never stopped teaching, using any available venue, in parking lots, next to piles of rubble, in tents, and under tarps.
The long-range objective of Sing for Haiti is to assist in rebuilding Holy Trinity Music School. A major part of that effort is fundraising, and the Sing for Haiti Web site recently installed a crowdsourcing link to RALLY.org with a goal of $250,000. However, because, as of this writing, only $50 has been raised, visibility of the Sing for Haiti effort is equally important.
This objective will be furthered through a Gala Benefit Concert to be held at the beginning of next month. This event will be hosted by soprano Deborah Voigt. Voigt will be joined by mezzo Susan Graham, who will appear as a special guest star. Other participating vocalists will include sopranos Kiera Duffy and Laquita Mitchell and tenor Nicholas Phan. Composer Jake Heggie will contribute as pianist.
The concert will also feature performances by the two children’s choirs of Holy Trinity Music School. These are Les Petits Chanteurs and La Chorale des Fillettes. Donato Cabrera will serve as conductor. In addition, as is usually the case with fundraising concerts, the performance will be followed by a Gala Reception.
The Sing with Haiti Gala Benefit Concert will take place on Wednesday, October 2. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in Grace Cathedral (1100 California Street on Nob Hill). Concert tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster, which has created an event page on their Web site for all purchases. Tickets for the Gala Reception, which will be held at the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel, are being handled separately. Those interested in attending should call 415-625-2942.
