The latest buzz on the web has been running rampant between several large websites to take action against Congress and the proposed legislature. A shutdown of Wikipedia’s English page and a censored Google is a statement against censoring the internet. Even Craigslist has joined in on the protesting and has shut down the activity of their site.
SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are the two bills of legislature being brought forth to Congress concerning online trafficking of copyrighted properties and counterfeit goods. If the bills were to be passed it allows access by the copyright holder and the U.S. Department of Justice to seek action against websites hosting unwarranted content.
SOPA and PIPA are the beginning pieces for the freedom of speech to be harmed. The power of the bills will create many problems due to the discretion being in the hands of the government. Will the power remain to ending piracy or will content such as blogs and websites containing uncopyrighted work being censored due to profanity, political tastes, adult images, etc. all due to the opinion of an “official”?
Will Generation Y become censored?
The legislature being brought forth will harm the first amendment given to all citizens of the United States. Freedom of speech will be stripped away leaving all to guess what is okay and what is not okay to post. It is one thing to push to end piracy, which is wrong, but another to push an agenda which will destroy the freedom we love so much.
Generation Y has become the cornerstone of the internet from the use of blogging, online shopping, Facebook, the list goes on and on. With activity online being a daily use for Gen Y’ers, the necessity to act now has to be done.
