Sony’s water resistant Xperia Z2 features a top-of-the-line camera that bests even the high resolution 41MP sensor on the Nokia 808 Pureview. Benchmark test results reveal where the Xperia Z2's photo and video capabilities stand against its competitors.
As Android Authority reports (April 8), digital imaging experts DxO Labs put the Xperia Z2 through the test. In comparatives, the Sony flagship's camera bested the image capturing hardware of other mobile phones including its predecessor, the Xperia Z1. It edged out the Carl Zeiss lens toting Nokia 808 Pureview camera phone from its number one spot in benchmark test results.
DxO Lab's thorough photography and videography tests on the Z2’s 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor built-in camera resulted in a score of 79. Photo capabilities include high resolution images at 5248 x 3936 pixels and 4K video capturing at 4096 × 3072 pixels. DxO labs used the phone's default video mode of (3840 x 2160) during tests. The Xperia Z2’s 1/2.3-inch type BSI CMOS sensor and Sony G-type 27mm equivalent with an aperture of f/2.0 could be the secret ingredient for great photos and videos, even underwater.
According to the DxOMark mobile test results breakdown, the Z2 was given an overall photo score of 81, with an 88 for exposure and contrast, 74 for color, 84 for autofocus and 83 for texture. Under the category for video, the Z2 received an overall score of 73, with 95 for exposure and contract, 79 for color, 52 for autofocus and 81 for texture.
“Autofocus moves step-by-step rather than continuously, and is unpredictable,” DxO Labs said. The positive aspects of the Sony Xperia Z2’s video recording is good stabilization (also during conditions of walking motion), good texture production and low noise levels.
When capturing images with the Xperia Z2, there’s “occasional white balance inaccuracies indoors. Outdoors, a slight blue tint is noticeable in certain images,” DxO said. Some positives include impressive detail preservation in outdoor settings, visible details in low-light settings, fast and responsive overall exposure. The Xperia Z2’s good overall flash performance when capturing images allows for positive exposure, color, white balance, noise and detail.
DxO Lab rates the Z2 with the highest score of any smartphone camera it’s tested to date. The top five DxOMark mobile photo and video benchmark results list the Xperia Z2 number one above the Nokia 808 Pureview, Sony Xperia Z1, Apple iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S4.
