Today Sony has unveiled a fourth multiplayer mode in God of War: Ascension. This mode is known as Trial of the Gods, and is a two player timed trial mode. You and a buddy must survive, not only against waves of creatures, but the very sands of time itself.
From the start, the Trial will be available in three maps: Desert of Lost Souls, Forum of Hercules, and the Rotunda of Olympus, and Sony has plans to make it available in several more maps later on. Each map features five increasingly difficult waves against hordes of enemies, including, but not limited to, gorgons, satyrs, cyclopes, and cerberuses.
As the round begins, the sands of time begin running out, which causes you to have to replay from the start if you run out of time (or die). In order to add time to the clock, you must kill the enemies spawning, and, if you do well enough, you will even receive a bonus Timed Tier Award (comes in bronze, silver, and gold). If you and your pal manage to survive the five waves, you still won't be in the clear; An epic boss will then challenge you to battle.
Why did they include a time trial survival mode? Chrysafidis explains, "With Trial of the Gods, we wanted to help bridge the single player and multiplayer experience, giving players a chance to work on their skill-set and gain valuable experience points with a friend, before jumping into the competitive arena." Finally, one may be wondering what will happen if they lack a friend to join them in the Trial. The answer to that is simple as well: The mode, though multiplayer, can indeed be played solo.
