Since the release of the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, the two biggest console gaming companies have been largely resting on their laurels. It appears the long wait for a new system from either of these two companies is over. Sony sent out invitations on Thursday for an event that hints at an unveiling of the Playstation 4 on February 20. The Wall Street Journal for one, is declaring this event to be that unveiling despite no official confirmation from Sony just yet.
Sony has said that those attending the event will get to see "the future" of console gaming. Whether or not this is actually called the Playstation 4, the Wall Street Journal is confident that it will be another in the Playstation line. The timing is not a coincidence as Microsoft is expected to announce their next gaming console in the very near future and Sony is clearly trying to beat them to the punch. Reports also say that the Playstation 4 will be on the market just in time for Holiday shopping.
Obviously, details are a bit sketchy about the look and feel of the new console, but rumors say that the PS4 will still have optical discs like the current consoles. The one change might be a move away from the Cell chip that is inside the PS3 to an AMD-based setup on the PS4. This would hamper backwards compatibility and could annoy a shrinking base that Sony and Microsoft have been losing to mobile gaming devices like the iPad and even smartphones.
