Sony plotting female superhero film set in 'Amazing Spider-Man' universe

Sony is planning a female superhero film
Sony Pictures

Just when you thought Sony was scaling back on their aspirations of creating Marvel-esque Cinematic Universe with their “Amazing Spider-Man” franchise—it gets expanded.

Deadline dropped a huge bombshell today when it reported that Sony has targeted a 2017 release for a female superhero film in the “Amazing Spider-Man” universe.

After the critical and commercial disappointment that was “Amazing Spider-Man 2” (The film was the lowest grossing Spider-Man film to date) Sony took some time to reevaluate their strategy. And right before San Diego Comic Con announced that they were pushing back the release date of “Amazing Spider-Man 3” from 2016 to 2018 and that they would release the villain-centric spin-off “Sinister Six” in November 2016.

The trade’s report does not specify which character is up to bat for Sony in this female spin-off—but one character that jumps to the top of everyone’s mind is Felicia Hardy AKA Black Cat.

With all the recent success of comic book films especially with this past weekend’s record breaking box office return from a lesser known property “Guardians of the Galaxy,” many thought it was only a matter of time before someone would take a chance on a female-led superhero film—However, no one expected it to come from Sony.

This comes hot off the heels of the news Sony’s next installment of the “Ghostbusters” franchise may be a female-driven reboot.
