After months of rumors, Sony officially unveiled its next-generation console Wednesday in New York City. The Playstation 4 is real and it is coming this year.
Sony president Andrew House officially unveiled the the PS4 on stage during the Playstation Meeting along with Sony's strategy to make the "Playstation" brand an entire platform that extends beyond the home console.
Lead Architect Mark Cerny introduced the PS4 by saying that the goal is remove barriers between the player and the game. It also was made with game developers in mine.
Cerny called the PS4 a "super-charged PC" that uses the x86 architecture so that it will be familiar for developers. It also features an "enhanced" PC GPU, 8GB of unified DDR5 memory and a local hard drive.
The PS4 new controller that leaked earlier was also confirmed. It is officially called the DualShock 4 and features a lightbar that identifies the player and synchs up with a steroscopic camera to track controller movement.
Some of the unique features of includes the ability to suspend and resume play sessions. Pressing the power button will start the PS4 immediately and allow them to continue where they left off. Additionally, users will be able to play downloadable titles immediately after they begin downloading them. As soon as enough of the game has been downloaded, it is available to play.
The PS4 will also be able to team up with the PS Vita to support remote play. Those that own a PS Vita will be able to play any PS4 game on the handheld as the next-gen console acts like a server. At least, that is what Sony is working towards.
