Sony explains the lack of MAG reviews

MAG box art.

MAG is one of the biggest exclusive games on the Playstation 3 in 2010. Despite the released date quickly approaching, the ambitious first-person shooter hasn’t been reviewed by the media yet. Jeff Rubenstein, the Social Media Manager of SCEA, explain why this is the case in the comments section of the Playstation.Blog:

Reviews can’t be written until the game is actually out. I mean, you can’t pass pre-release judgment on a game whose major, industry-leading feature (256 players in a single battle) can’t be tested until release day.

MAG will be released in North America on January 26th.

I thought this was common knowledge? Obviously an online game as massive as this one won't have beta pre-release servers up for reviewers to play in. On top of that though, is the fact that you really need to play MAG at least for a few days if not a week in order to get the general feel of everything it has to offer (i.e upgrade tree, managing a squad/platoon, etc)..

Pretty much common sense imo, reading some of those comments it looked like people actually thought media weren't reviewing the game because it sucked that bad? Really? XD

Historically any big AAA title that does not receive its review prior to release is a Key clue that the game will NOT live up to its hype. Think about it from a pub/dev standpoint; if your game rocks you would want to get the word out. Since when do 10's, 9.8, 9.5, and 9.0 hurt game sales? They dont ! Buyers beware - wait for the first reviews befor you spend your 60.00.

  • Gill 2 years ago

They would've let the reviews go if they were good, this is just confirmation of me not buying the game. The beta was alright, it was just so bland.

  • alex 2 years ago

well the developers could be playing the game with all the guys that received the review copy of the game so they can see whats up and get a review out, maybe?

  • Nate 2 years ago

Spot on Sentry! You think people would know this huh?

  • Mark 2 years ago

    Will be average

  • KKaos 2 years ago

Why are people still saying that the lack of pre-release reviews point to the fact that it's crap?
Did you even read the article you're commenting on?
How is a reviewer going to be able to write a fair review on a 256 player multiplayer game where there's noone else playing? Best case, they'd put up a review server but even then there'd hardly be any players.

  • Alex 2 years ago

You can tell from the comments section how many people bother to read articles anymore. Just look at the title and go from there and @#$$@ the rest seems to be the status quo of the day, and I cant help but feel that some of the people claiming the game is going to bomb are fanboy single console owners of a certain system who this game isnt showing up on. Anyone care to place bets? lol

  • Mark 2 years ago

And I bet you're the same kid who was calling Halo: ODST an expansion pack yet here you are crying over MAG, LOL.

Listen here guys. Its general knowledge the servers are probably on yet for all we know. And i don't see Sony activating it and inviting 256 reviewers to come and play it just to write a crappy review about something we all know the basics of. Its a freaking FPS MMOFPS PERIOD what more do u wanna know?!?!?!

  • solid snake 2 years ago

Because halo 3 odst is an side story expansion pack & halo reach is a prequel of the halo origins it's that simple but anyways back on topic..mag is what it is a online only game intended for multi player team based interaction between players online on a massive scale focused more on the experience then the presentation.

  • jacksons98 2 years ago

If this game is as good as Warhawk was, you can count me in.

  • Hmm... 2 years ago

I bought the game three days ago...YES THREE DAYS, but the servers in not up yet, they just released an update to the game which is around 100 MB.......so how can you review a an online game when the servers is not up yet???

  • DevilDogA99 2 years ago

This games poor grapics & sad controls will be over shadowed by games like Bad This game will be over shadowed by games like Company 2 new Halo Games & games like KZ3 & R2 ( if they come out this yr) Despite the fact that it offers 256 players for one big reason, u can't invite your friend over & have them play it with u! Come on that's what almost every 360 game does & that's why they move consels, cause eveyone gets to see the awsomnes & gets to buy something they know they can invite a group of there friends over for

HE/SHE pretty much nailed it !!

It's absolutely ridiculous to believe that a company releasing a game whose major feature is 256 player multiplayer would not have the server infrastructure in place well ahead of its release.

You need this in order to test the game at all and to make Beta testing possible. It appears as if there was close to a 4 month beta period based on comments from other sites.

You can certainly question the validity of those claims, but if it's actually true that there aren't servers up and running, then be ready for a very rocky experience as early buyers will essentially be unwilling beta testers.

As others have said, this could be a way of delaying inevitable bad reviews from appearing until the first wave of copies has been sold. Comments from beta testers have said as much for this as well....

    Caveat Emptor.

Zipper + Server problems = Nothing new!

Anyone who's a SOCOM fan know too well that Zipper and server problems are a common thing. Unless they get there sh_t together MAG will get one big PASS!

  • JJ 2 years ago

Well i'm pretty sure that its gonna b pack when the servers open... after all when i played the BETAA i saw ppl playing the game all day all night... ppl are running their mouths yet they play MW2 like its the best thing in the world... I play both games and i can tell you the final version of MAG will b better than MW2 online... MAG is pretty much like Battlefield Bad Company 2 multiplayer, only with more ppl

  • shield=dumb 2 years ago

zipper never even made confrontation tht was /6

  • Examined 2 years ago

If the BETA was any indication; this is the the weakest link int he exclusive lineup the Sony has this year.

    The BETA was garbage.

  • Examined 2 years ago

Forgot to mention that it's hilarious to pretend this game is Industry Leading in anything other than the over-hyped list.

It's "original" features boil down to expanded multiplayer size. Yeah, real industry leading haha.

  • Shield 2 years ago

I never said Zipper made Confrontation dumbass newb! Zipper has had server problems since SOCOM 1, 2 and CA. Can't remember when they didn't have server issues so why should MAG be any different!?

  • Mall 2 years ago

i played socom 2 from the day it was online until socom 3, then i went back to socom 2 even with code 9. from my experience zipper's servers are always sh!t. but that really doesnt make sense that theres no review yet. why wait to review a game the day it comes out? the game wasnt really marketed at all so i guess theyre relying on the beta's to do it for them. either way imma pass on this cause theres nothing innovative. just a sh!tload of people at once.

  • Zipper=Fail 2 years ago

Zipper should of just named there new game "LAG" since that's what they're known best for. Lmao!
