Sony Online Entertainment has laid off 70 employees from its San Diego offices. While Sony informed the public of the layoffs on August 28, 2013. They failed to disclose just how many employees were being affected. The company cut jobs from the Austin offices as well, however we still do not have those numbers.
When they first announced the layoffs the company issued a statement saying that "This strategic alignment of resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online games, as well as to align development resources towards our current portfolio of MMOs and the highly-anticipated future installments of the EverQuest franchise, EverQuest Next Landmark and EverQuest Next."
According to Sony's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filing, they have cut a number of positions. Including programmers, artists, human resource positions as well a creative director.
Sony Online Entertainment creates and maintains free-to-play MMOs such as EverQuest, DC Universe Online and Planetside 2. They also have a highly anticipated title EverQuest Next Landmark launching this winter.
