Sony announces Playstation 4 Game Console

At an event last night in New York, Feb. 20, 2013, Sony announced their next generation video game console. Not surprisingly, it is called 'Playstation 4' (PS4). Some of the more interesting features include the ability to try a game before you buy and watching a friends gameplay in spectator mode.

Showing off a new title called Killzone: Shadow Fall, Sony demonstrated a brand new Dual Shock controller that features a touch pad on the front. Although much fanfare was made about the new Playstation 4, Sony never actually showed the device or discussed potential pricing of the device.

A press release was sent out (via Engadget) moments after the event was over to announce a PlayStation companion app for iOS and Android. This app allows tablets or phones to function as second-screen devices for the PS4. According to the press release:

"A new application from SCE called Playstation App will enable iPhone, iPad and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

Sony has stated that the Playstation 4 will be released sometime during the 2013 Holiday season, but no mention of the app release date or what the pricing will be. For more information on the new PS4, checkout the Sony Playstation webpage.
