Sonu Nigam: The singer behind the stars

Riding a wave of popularity throughout India and beyond, playback singer Sonu Nigam will bring his “Klose to My Soul” tour to the Nassau Coliseum in May. What did you say? Of course you know what a playback singer is. It’s a tradition as American as “West Side Story,” “Singing in the Rain” and Bollywood.

More than a triple threat

As entertainers go, Sonu Nigam is more than a triple threat. In addition to singing, dancing and acting, the 40 year old Indipop veteran has been a television host and highly successful recording artist. It’s certainly no secret that Nigam, who was featured on Britney Spears 2011 “I Wanna Go” Desi remix, has been the behind-the-scenes voice in several popular Indian movies; thus, his importance as a leading playback artist.

Voice behind the stars

Substituting for an actor’s singing voice in a movie is nothing new. It’s happened many times before in Hollywood. Do you remember Natalie Wood in the film “West Side Story?” She lip-synced her way through the musical scenes to the inspirational tones of Marni Nixon.

In the 1952 classic “Singing in the Rain,” during the song “Would You,” Debbie Reynolds moves her mouth to the vocals of Betty Noyes. Much in the same way, Sonu Nigam, sometimes referred to as “The Lord of the Chords,” has been the voice for a variety of Indian blockbusters, including 2003’s “Kal Ho Naa Ho.”

What to expect from his Coliseum show

The US leg of Nigam’s 2014 tour begins in May. According to a article published Apr. 6, 2013 about one of last year’s shows, “Review: Sonu Nigam goes top notch in Dubai,” Michael Gomes noted, “The singing sensation, looking dapper in a white suit, did not take long to connect to his audience…Fans were clearly enjoying themselves as the singer engaged them in an impromptu session…”

Nigam, who continues to enjoy commercial success in America, loves his fans and they obviously love him. Need you ask anything more?

What, where, when

Sonu Nigam’s “Klose to My Soul” concert tour comes to the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale on Sat., May 17, 2014 at 8 p.m.
