Sonsona ushers the future of Philippine boxing and becomes its newest world champion

 Sonsona makes history (AP Ph

Who said there is no life in Philippine boxing after Manny Pacquiao

General Santos City's own "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona breaks into the record books as he became the second-youngest world champion boxer from the Philippines at 19 years and 5 weeks, when he defeated Jose "Carita" Lopez for the WBO super flyweight championship belt just moments ago at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.

The fight started rather slowly as both fighter sized each other up in the opening rounds. But in the 4th, the young Sonsona overpowered the 37-year old veteran from Puerto Rico and scored a knock-down. Lopez appeared hurt but Sonsona was unable to put him away. The ensuing rounds saw back-and-forth action and were competitive but Sonsona was able to build on the momentum he got with the knock-down and secure the victory,

Despite showing some signs of inexperience and not being able to finish off Lopez, Sonsona proved that he was indeed worthy to become a world champion.

The scores were announced 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109 all in favor of the new champ to the delight of the Filipino-Canadian fans that came up to watch the fight card. With the victory, Sonsona also improved to 14-0 (12 KOs) and kept his record unblemished. It was only the second time his fights went the distance but Sonsona more than held his own and showed a lot of heart throughout the fight during times when he got hit with solid blows by his veteran opponent. Props to his trainers Jun Agrabio and Nonito Donaire Sr. for a masterful job done.

Chalk one up for the Philippines in it's new rivalry against Puerto Rico. Next up will be Rodel Mayol facing Ivan Calderon on September 12 in Puerto Rico for Calderon's WBO lifht flyweight belt and later on this year in the main event, Manny Pacquiao goes up against Miguel Cotto for Cotto's WBO welterweight title.

Ano na ngyn sa mga kritiko ni marvin? akala nio he was not yet bloomed to fight Carita, that he'll end up like Banal and Boom Boom. Eto Kau!!!

  • croc_venom 2 years ago

    Marvin,
Congratz, but i wnt u 2develop more attack combinations on ur right hand, use faking blows and instill more accurate shots and next time ask, ur trainer to develop ur stamina and endurance to last the fight, ur still young and there’s still lot to develop… one last thing, be cautious of the dirty tactics layed by ur opponent.

    My brother Sonsona,

I am proud of you, and you deserve it your reward being an honest and dedicated boxer. You are the best champion for me.

This is merely a brotherly advice to you that you must maintain your best performance with strong faith in our God.

    Congratulations!!!

Guys please post a video of Marvin fight in youtube...congrats marvin,,,we are proud of you...

  • BiboiBanal 2 years ago

I think Morris East is the youngest filipino boxer champ...

  • Raging Bull$hit 2 years ago

I want to see this kid against loudmouth Darchinyan.I believe he will f@k Darchinyan's @$$ badly. The good thing is his trainer is Nonito Donaire Sr. who knew Darchinyan's style very well.Promoter of Sonsona should make this fight happen and knocking out Darchinyan will make him more marketable which I know he can do it.

  • viva caritas 2 years ago

jose was robbed, how can the scorecards be that wide? two points deduction and a KD is only 3 pts... the kid didnt dominate, it should have been a draw or a split win for Carita.

Go Ivan and Miguel! make PR proud!

  • INTING 2 years ago

I told you guys just wait and see what happen.

Marvin won the fight andhe is our new champ mannn.

For the other guys like LEO who always give critics to Marvin you are a lot of s h i t pare. hunong na anang imong style pray lang gud ta kon dunay maaway nga pinoy ...

  • Jonathan Guardo 2 years ago

  • lito lorenas 2 years ago

oh baby, how sweet it is! mabuhay!

  • Y101 2 years ago

Good training camp is the key of Marvin Sonsona's victory. World class trainers like Donaire Sr. would definitely produce world class boxers and world champion.

Good job to Team Sonsona and congratulations.

  • krizian 2 years ago

k biboi.. you think its morris east how can tv show here in phil.say that marvin is looking to become the youngest ever..did ronnie nathanielz did not edit what he is talking about in his weekly boxing show at cs9..

  • krizian 2 years ago

viva caritas.. i think ur a puerto rican, let face it marvin didnt dominate, but if you think of those kd and deduction.yeah its only 3 points..but did u ever count how many times ur boxer get wobbled and just hold on..i dont think its a robbery, but you thinking the fight to be a draw..thats a clear robbery on your part..and i just hope mayol will not be rob in puerto rico next week..gudluck mayol..go for 2-0

  • Leo Lastimosa 2 years ago

  • krizian 2 years ago

congrats marvin your the best young filipino world champion mabuhay.....

  • Marlon Belleta 2 years ago

    krizia,

YOU CANNOT SEE THE BEAUTY OF THE FORREST WHEN YOU ARE IN IT. You cannot see how damn your boxers are when you yourselves are like them.

  • afide 2 years ago

This kid is the real deal after all. He has maturity even at the toughest rounds of the fight and knew how to pace himself. Needs more accuracy and training on defense, but he is only 19. Man, Pacquiao was faster than this kid but definitely not as ring smart as Sonsona when they were both 19. This kid's jab is decent and I agree with what I have seen in a recent post, he is like a combination of Donaire and pre-superstar Pacquiao.

Mabuhay ka hijo, don't get swell headed as this is just the beginning of a great international career. You have a long way to go, learn how to make your success last by having your feet firmly planted on the ground - that is when you are not fighting in the ring, lol.

  • Kubrador 2 years ago

I have seen the fight of this new pride of Filipino community around the world. Looking at the news how he methodically dispatch his opponent. Upcoming sensation and young boxer he would surpass the achievement made by the so called pound for pound boxer of the world Manny Pacquiao. Our hope and pray he should not as lax as Manny who opt to be in showbiz functions than training for his most difficult bout of his career. I'll tell you guys if he choose to train here in the Philippines and a lot of disturbance will be coming in. He will be lucky if he can survive five rounds of assault from Cotto. We will be seeing him bloodied and dismayed. That if he will not seriously consider all the recommendations by Freeddie Roach. If he lose in that fight, definitely he will lose in the upcoming election. PEOPLE LOOK AT HIM AS BRAVE FILIPINO FIGHTER NOT AS FILIPINO PUBLIC SERVANT.

  • bs 2 years ago

congrats marvin! clearly the winner! no question.

  • joey 2 years ago

filipinos are roaches they could never in a million years surpass prican boxing

  • adunt 2 years ago

As of now its still a fluke, he beat up an old warrior, a no name a champ but no name. Still early to say Marvin is great, time will tell.

  • KuPal 2 years ago

grats Marvin for a job well done. But as far as he's the next man to carry the torch ala Micheal Jordan to Kobe? Well its too early to tell. But if he keeps the fire (that Hunger) that he shows then who knows he can/could surpass a few Filipino legend(s). Only time will tell buddy...

  • BiboiBanal 2 years ago

@krizian - sometimes our very own filipino writers lack accuracy except The Dean Quinito Henson...It's Nathanzielz who says that not Quinito...If you are regular readers here in Pacland,,,you woukd know that Marvin is the second youngest champion...I think The Dean has an article before about who is the youngest filipino champion...

congratz marvin. always stay humble. words of advice bro. never exaggerate your words when interviewed. never mention your power and skill. let your fist talk. And you will be remembered forever win or lose. other young stars are ignored when they lose because the eat their own words.

  • Paclander 2 years ago

Hey joey if we pinoys are roaches then shame on you who have beaten by roaches we're suppose to stepped and be crushed but what a shame we crushed you instead wait until all your champions like cotto, lopez, and calderon, end up like mexican. we maybe poor but we are rich in good values in life. we respect other people and we are glad even others disrespect us because it made us more courageous, patriotic and ready to defend our country from people like you.

  • POGI 2 years ago

Pacman now already lossed his way at the right road, lets all boycot his movie, tv show and even his political ambisions for he's no way the man way back then. for he is no longer prioritize the sport who put him to fame, he no longer needs the boxing so we no longer need him too... for he is just a good as a boxer and non at all....

  • POGI 2 years ago

guys lets wait for Pacman article in philboxing.com and lets post our comments there, lets show him and read him our comments on how we are totally disgusted about his attitude today...

  • jessieray 2 years ago

marvin sonsona has the potential to become the next manny pacquiao. he brings the same level of excitement and fire in the ring. great start for a young fighter.

  • The passing of the torch 2 years ago

Hail the next coming and others like him. the king is dead. Pacman is dead...killed by himself....from hero to zero. I knew Marvin can do it and hopefully emerges as the next big thing with the likes of Nonito et al. Hopefully they don't end-up like Pac whose head swelled like a pumpkin and now acts like a spoilt divo. More power kid!! show the world what a Pinoy really is and never forget where you came from!!With you all the way!

  • myk 2 years ago

first of all i would like to congratulate the new champion for bringing new pride for the philippines. It's quite comporting for us boxing fans to see another fresh and promising fighter on the rise & another "M" in the sport by the name of Marvelous Marvin Sonsona while seeing some signs and symptoms of self destruction from our "old" M champ Manny Pacquiao.
I opted not to elaborate more of what i'm trying to say, instead,i would rather turn my “FURY”to a writer of 411 mania named PJ Parlan on his article titled: The FJ Fury 09.03.09: Sonsona's Title Shot is Premature. I made a comment condemning two phrases and one question on that article. Now let me ask just one question for FJ BLURRY Parlan; Did you already eat your own CRAP or did you sling it outside the window of your useless office?
Allow me to ask one favor from you Dennis “D source” can you give a bit of writng clinic to this kindergarten?!

  • Guile 2 years ago

Sonsona is GOOD! He will do more damage in the boxing ring when PACQUIAO retires! I LIKE THIS KID!!!!!
