It was as if Marvin Sonsona placed a ticking time bomb using his left hand on Jose "Carita" Lopez's right temple. Upon planting, his befuddled foe paused as if confused by the ticking... tick, tock, tick, tock... Boom!! Down went the 37-year-old pugilist like a pile of bricks. And just like that, Sonsona bid the grizzled veteran from Puerto Rico, "sweet sayonara." And "sayonara" did "Carita"- to his WBO super flyweight belt.
So I went to the one place every boxing fan needs to go to on the world wide web, and that's PACLAND, and saw a thread where posters suggested a new moniker for the newest Filipino world champion. "Marvelous" isn't bad at all, although we all know who the real "Marvelous" is and that is one of my all-time favorites Marvin Hagler, so if not to seriously suggest a new nick name for Sonsona, I figured it would be fun nonetheless. Here are some interesting suggestions I saw from forum posters:
MArvin "MASO" SOnsona = " the sledgehammer"
Marvin "Monsoon" Sonsona
Marvin "Sodomizer" Sonsona -- (cmon', it's funny!)
On my behalf I have a couple of suggestions as well. How about Marvin "Agustin" Sonsona? Joke! No, seriously, Marvin "Sonsonic Boom" Sonsona sounds cool to me although it kinda doesn't make sense. Or why not Marvin "Sweet Sayonara" Sonsona? That way he'll get Japanese sponsors too! No? O well, I'll leave the moniker-giving to you guys.
It's only a matter of time until the comparisons to Nonito Donaire Jr. start pouring, so I figured why not put it out there myself. Honestly, Sonsona did look like a young Donaire to me on a lot of ocassions and coincidentally, Sonsona's trainer looks like Nonito Donaire Jr.'s former trainer and still (last time I checked) current father Nonito Donaire Sr.- oh yeah, my bad, that was actually Nonito Donaire Sr. in his corner. With that said, I'm sure this will be a rivalry and a subject of heated conversations for a long time coming- shoot isn't that what Pacland is for anyway? What say you El Critico?
To those who insist that Sonsona is the youngest Filipino champion, I suggest you tell that to Morris East. The guy may be "half" but he was and is one hundred percent Filipino in his heart and how he lived. East won a world title when he was 19 years and a month old, about a week younger than Sonsona. Got to give East his due respect and place in history.
Lastly, what's up with the stockings? Really? No offense but Sonsona looked like a ballerina in those tights underneath his shorts. I know NBA players started wearing them for a while until the NBA banned it, and something tells me nobody missed the fashion trend. Come on Marvin, those tights got to go. Although, if they serve a real purpose like "superstition", then by all means keep them on. I don't want to jinx the newest Filipino champion.
Just as how I did here and on Pinoy Power 2 last August, I will be keeping a close eye on our Filipino pugs. Congratulations again to Marvin Sonsona and to his trainers, handlers and supporters. This is a much deserved victory not only for them, but for the entire nation and people of the Philippines.

back in the days they dont fight for months after, they fight days after the last. pancho villa fought 92 fights inside 5 years imagine that. now days inside 5 years a regular boxer would probably fight 10 times.

The tights or the stockings promotes good circulation and venous return. A lot of people know this especially medical professionals but i'm not sure if you can apply this as a boxer.
Hey D Source, first off I'd like to say that I read and respect your articles (all Examiners).
But I'm not diggin' the "Sweet Sayonara" bit as a catchy headliner...I think we all know that the real bit is "Sweet Champorado", lol.
Anyway, I like the High Socks on Nonito, and Marvin sports in the ring. It's different, provides a bit of personality and if they feel comfortable with them while they box, then let it be.
I mean let's all be serious, the lower weight classes don't actually have the bulky calves/legs to show off.
I love the high socks for boxers and baseball players. Boxing could really use "different".

I think Marvin pulled it off by being the aggressor in the fight, was a close fight to me. His ability to take hard punches was impressive. I was afraid his mid section won't hold up. He could improve his jab, make it more consistent to rack up points, learn different combos to confuse opponent's defense, better timing. He is still vulnerable after he throws strong punches and gets out of balance. Keep up the good work.
I hope filipino fighter stop using monickers that were used by great boxers like boom boom, bazooka and now marvelous be original for this i would suggest the monicker "shotgun marvin" cause he packs one hell of a punch congrats!

i like the way sonsona fight, with his heart. he has a good power in his hands. hope he will develop more his jabs and combinations. then his midsection and more roadwork for stamina. if he develop this in year to come, he will be a champ in other weight classes. i like his aggressivenes if he knows that his opponent is hurt, ala manny din. keep up kid.

Guys from SBS butler were hoping for Marvin to win.Guys like Toney,jess,hubert and me. Yes I was there too and the place is saudi arabia.Of course some has doubts but we are happy he pulls through.
