Viewers were stunned when Gemma ended up killing Tara, especially since they had talked and he was able to convince Tara to not take the boys and let him deal with Patterson. He had made a deal that would leave Tara out of prison and to be able to take care of her boys. Unfortunately that meant that Jax could be facing a long time behind bars. Kurt Sutter told TV Line,
"I knew fairly early on that Tara would die before the final season -- probably as early as Season 2. I didn’t quite now exactly how it was going to happen in terms of story, but in terms of a mythology mile-mark, [I knew] that’s when it would happen."
Katey Sagal explained that Tara's murder was not planned ahead of time, that it was because of a blind rage due to her belief that Tara had made a deal to send Jax away to prison while she would be able to leave with her boys. Gemma had just lost Nero and thought she was also going to lose her son and her grandchildren.
As for the way Tara was murdered, Sutter said,
"I knew I wanted it to be simple and pedestrian and of Gemma’ world, not of the club’s world. I didn’t want it to be a gun or a knife. There’s almost something more horrific in terms of us seeing Gemma in that opening montage washing dishes and you have no idea that something as simple as dirty dish water and a carving fork would be used as implements of death… Gemma is just reacting."
While nobody knows what will happen when "Sons of Anarchy" returns, it has been confirmed that Jimmy Smits will be in season 7.
