The newest episode of Nintendo Direct confirmed another fighter for the next “Super Smash Bros.” titles. That character is Sonic the Hedgehog and his return was confirmed on October 1, 2013. Sonic has made one previous appearance in the series, in the most recently released entry: “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.”
In Sonic’s previous appearance, he was an extremely faster fighter that was very good at getting in a few quick hits before escaping to safety. His attacks didn’t hit particularly hard, but they were very fast and were generally difficult to dodge. His moves, however, did generally have very short range, requiring Sonic to get very close to his opponents in order to hit them. His speed could also be difficult to manage, making it relatively easy to accidently run or fall off the stage. In contrast, his speed also made him hard to hit, making him a good fighter to use against heavy opponents like Bowser or Donkey Kong.
Sonic was the second third party character to be introduced in the “Super Smash Bros.” franchise (the first being Solid Snake). Solid Snake will likely return in the next two titles and with Mega Man already in the roster that will bring the total to three third party characters. It has already been confirmed that the game will not be overloaded with third party characters, so it is likely that, at most, there will be only one or two more third party characters.
