The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision reports that a movie based off of Sonic the Hedgehog is currently in development, according to producer Neal Moritz and leadership at Columbia Pictures.
Columbia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghellla adds “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base…Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
The producers are also currently also anticipating to make a franchise out of the blue, chili-dog loving, hedgehog.
This development could not have come any sooner. It was only a matter of time until Sonic got his own movie, as he has enjoyed television success on the Saturday morning cartoon circuit. Many other properties have already received theirs and many are also currently in development. Sonic is among the pantheon of classic video game characters and it seems right that he receives the big screen treatment.
Hollywood also seems to be loading up on video game properties as of late, as movies based off of several major game franchises are currently in some kind of production. These include the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Metal Gear Solid. Gamers have also been burned in the past, as many high profile games before it, such as Super Mario Bros. and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time were made into movies that were received poorly by critics and audiences alike. Video game fans have also been let down by high profile projects falling through, such as Gore Verbinski’s take on Bioshock as well as Neill Blomkamp’s take on Halo.
Hopefully all works out for this project, as many will probably want to relieve adventures with a character from their youth, and reminisce about playing the first Sonic the Hedgehog on a Six-Pack cartridge on a Sega Genesis. A release date has yet to be determined.
