Sonic the Hedgehog gets new look with 'Sonic Boom'

Everybody's favorite Blue Blur is getting a new look, new game, new show, new toys and a whole lot more as SEGA announces the upcoming Sonic Boom for the 3DS and WiiU.

The new look at the Sonic series

This new game will not be a reboot of the series and these designs won't replace the old ones. The games will also not be released in Japan according to IGN, as it seems SEGA is hard at work on a different Sonic game with the old designs.

Considering the games are based on the accompanying Sonic Boom television program, it's not too surprising that the games wont be released in Japan. Hiroyuki Miyazaki, who is the SEGA chief content officer for Sonic, believes this project is something fans have been yearning for.

"SEGA is constantly looking to feed the appetite of Sonic fans, new and existing alike. The various pieces of the Sonic Boom project, such as its unique look, mix of comedy, and action and its focus on the whole ensemble with Sonic as the star, offer another exciting part of that universe for people to explore and enjoy. It will be at once familiar but also new."

The games themselves will apparently act as a prequel for the television show, which will release during the 2014/2015 season. The show will feature 52 episodes at 11 minutes apiece.

Gameplay seems to be engaging, if not entirely different from what you would expect out of a Sonic game. Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic all appear to be getting equal screen time, each with different gameplay elements. For example, Amy is featured often with her hammer while Knuckles is doing a bit of platforming.

What do you think of this new look at the Sonic series? Are you hyped to give this a go or will it be a colossal failure?
