The nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2014 induction may still be yet to be announced, but the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame have recently announced theirs.
Among the top performing songwriters up for induction are Madonna, John Mellencamp, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Also nominated are the Kinks’ Ray Davies, Cyndi Lauper, and Linda Perry (former 3 Non Blondes frontwoman, and writer for artists including Pink and Christina Aguliera), , Vince Gill, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, Cat Stevens, Harry Wayne Casey (of KC and the Sunshine Band), and recent Rockhall inductees Donovan and Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson.
The nomination list also includes plenty of nonperformers including Jim Weatherly (the man who wrote two of Gladys Knight and the Pips biggest hits), Motown songwriter William “Mickey” Stevenson, “Always on My Mind” writer Mark James, and soul writing duo Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham (best known for classic tunes including “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” and “Dark End of the Street”).
Eligible voters will be able to select two nominees for the list of performing songwriters, and three that are nonperforming. Voting will occur until December 16th. The gala for whomever is inducted in 2014 is set to be held on June 12th in New York City.
