Twentieth Century Fox announced Tuesday it will release Son of God in theaters nationwide on February 28, 2014.
In an article from USA Today, it was announced that Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey, executive producers of the hit TV miniseries The Bible, have adapted the five episodes dealing with the life of Jesus Christ for a major theatrical release, to be called Son of God. These five episodes have been edited and include some unseen footage into an inspirational motion picture film of two hours, 15 minutes.
Mark Burnett said the response from the miniseries was so encouraging that they have produced the story of Jesus into a major motion picture. "We believe firmly this is God's plan,” said Burnett. “There's no other explanation for it. This is not even some little limited independent release. This is a major motion picture release."
The television miniseries ran on The History Channel last spring and was an overwhelming success. Over 13 million tuned in to watch the premiere of the 10-part series which retells the stories of Scripture featuring the great prophets from Genesis through Revelation.
This major motion picture event brings the story of Jesus' life to audiences through compelling cinematic storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational. Portuguese star Diogo Morgado will reprise his role as Jesus Christ. With an inspiring orchestral score from Hans Zimmer, this film marks the first movie about Jesus’s life since Passion of the Christ was released nearly ten years ago.
The couple has engaged various pastors and evangelists to seek their input. They wanted to reach out to a wider community of people despite the various Christian denominations. They consulted with many religious leaders including Joel Osteen and Rick Warren.
According to Movieweb, Pastor Rick Warren had this to say about the film. "I've seen most of the films about Jesus produced in the past 50 years. Son of God stands alone, in a class by itself. It is a powerful and poignant movie, the best Jesus movie I have ever seen. I am thrilled that Twentieth Century Fox is distributing this film and I know it will be a blessing to millions when it opens all across America on February 28, 2014."
Burnett and Downey are also working on a follow-up to The Bible miniseries titled, A.D.: Beyond the Bible for NBC television.
The release of Son of God is scheduled to coincide with the beginning of Lent; the weekend before Ash Wednesday. This movie will be in theatres all across the country.
The Bible miniseries is currently available on DVD/Blu-ray.
