Son of God” movie reviews as well as live tweets came in on Thursday as some movie theaters across the country showed the film for the first time. “Over 4,000 people packed into the Mission Valley movie theaters Thursday evening to watch ‘The Son of God.’ Hundreds were turned away, but those who watched the film, based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, were over joyed by the spectacle,” reported San Diego’s Fox 5 on Feb. 27, 2014.

Pastor Miles McPherson of The Rock Church, which sponsored Thursday night’s premiere screening, gave the following review: “We teach this stuff every Sunday, but to see it and experience [it] on the big screen speaks to everyone in a new way.”

The movie “Son of God” is a feature film produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett and is a condensed form of their 2013 History Channel miniseries, “The Bible.” “If ‘The Bible’ was CliffsNotes for the Scriptures, ‘Son of God’ is the cheat sheet,” writes the Los Angeles Times.

“The two-hour film condenses about four hours of what already was hasty television, and it all winds up a little dramatically static. Still, the film can be best analogized as the ‘Bible’ equivalent of a ‘Survivor’ midseason clip show. John the Apostle (Sebastian Knapp) narrates the proceedings like ‘Survivor’ host Jeff Probst would.”

Being dramatically static, cobbled together, having cheesy visual effects, leaden dialogue, and containing melodramatic emotionalism are some of the reviews that are coming in via live Twitter feeds from people while watching the film.

“Interesting. Jesus hasn't been dirty all film while everyone else was. Now he's bloody & dirty. Symbolism is overwhelming,” reads one Twitter comment. And a Washington Post reviewer seems to agree: “As for Jesus himself, Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado is all beachy waves and beatific smiles, his teeth an impeccable white even when covered in blood.”

Besides Jesus' appearance in the film, one of the major review points is Roma Downey who plays the mother of Jesus.

Roma Downey gained fame as the kind-hearted angel Monica on the American TV series “Touched by an Angel.” She is presently the executive producer of the television miniseries “The Bible” on the History channel and together with her husband, are the producers of “Son of God.”

“I am seriously stunned and troubled by how much the crucifixion was about Roma Downey - I mean, Mary's. Paging CPE,” writes a Tweeter while the Washington Post points out that “there’s a lot of crying too, especially from Downey herself.”

The movie “Son of God” does have sadistic Roman soldiers, a lot of blood, and swordplay to provide viewers with controversial characters and action. And for those that are musically inclined, the movie brings up some memories of the 1970s musical “Jesus Christ Superstar. ” As such, one has to agree with San Diego’s Pastor Miles McPherson of The Rock Church. Whether or not you will enjoy the movie -- is left up to everyone.
