A 22-year-old ex-military man has been formally charged in the first degree murders of his father and his second wife.

Guillaume Gélinas' court appearance in Joliette yesterday lasted seconds. Gélinas, short and boyish-looking, appeared calm and composed as lawyers set his next court date for early March.

Luc Gélinas, 54, and Julie Lemieux, 35, were found dead last Thursday at their Terrebonne home. They had reportedly been stabbed to death. Luc Gélinas was killed on his birthday. Guillaume Gélinas was arrested the following day after police tracked him down via his cellphone using GPS.

The couple had worked in management positions at the SAQ, Quebec's liquor board.

Guillaume Gélinas has served as a corporal in the reserves at the Valcartier military base near Quebec City.

Gélinas' lawyer did not enter a plea or declare their decision on trial by jury or judge alone since the case will eventually be transferred to Quebec Superior Court.

Defence attorney Jonathan Meunier would not comment on his client's state of mind but did pass along the message from the families involved that "they are going through a terrible time and are trying to mourn together," adding they wanted to do so in private.

Meunier said he has received only part of the evidence which may determine if he'll ask for a psychiatric evaluation.
