According to Monday's News Channel 4, an Oklahoma City, Okla., man was arrested after his teenage son phoned the police to report that the family dog was being abused.

The concerned 16-year-old reached out to the authorities because he claimed that his dad, 28-year-old Eduardo Santos, attacked the family's one-year-old pit bull/retriever mix; the dad was allegedly angry that the dog had escaped from the yard.

According to the teen, Santos dragged the dog by his collar and cinched the collar tightly around the dog's neck; Santos is also accused of holding the young dog off the ground long enough to leave him gasping for air after he was released.

The pit bull mix was not the only victim of Santos' alleged anger - the teen also accused his father of hurling a shovel at another, small dog and told the authorities that the man had lashed out at family members as well.

Responding officers noted that the man smelled of alcohol. No information on the abused dog's condition following the alleged attack has been released.

The man accused of abusing the dog is now facing animal cruelty charges.

The ASPCA reports a strong correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence; individuals who have abused animals have been found to be more violent and to use more controlling behaviors than those who do not harm animals. The American Humane Society has stated that:

Animal cruelty problems are people problems. When animals are abused, people are at risk.
