Something other than a sex scandal out of Italy

Verona, Italy -- Just when you thought nothing more shocking could come out of Italy after Silvio “Bunga Bunga” Berlusconi’s (allegedly) having sex with an underage exotic dancer, or, in Italian, prostituta, from Morocco, comes this news. Younger Italians drink less wine than their parents.

A recent study conducted by the market research firm Unicab and released at this year’s Vinitaly Expo in Verona, shows that while 69% of Italians over the age of 65 drink wine every day, only 13% of 16 to 35 year olds do the same. The study also found that nearly half of the 22% of Italians who have reduced their wine consumption in the last two years have done so for health reasons.

While many younger Italians continue to smoke cigarettes and ride Vespas the decrease in wine consumption has come to be linked with improving health. Mysteriously, despite daily wine consumption, many of the parents and grandparents of the health conscious youth are still healthy, quiet old and shockingly alive.

Part of the decrease might have more to do with the fact that youth unemployment rates in Italy are the highest in Europe.
