In this exclusive interview with Mike Love, he discusses the possibilities that lie ahead for The Beach Boys in 2011 and beyond.
Q: Can fans anticipate Al Jardine, Brian Wilson and David Marks joining you and Bruce on a more frequent basis in 2011?
Mike Love: I’m not sure, but I’m open to anything and everything. I’ll just leave it at that because there are no imminent plans, but there’s a lot of discussion about what we should be doing involving and having to do with the 50th anniversary of The Beach Boys.… There are a lot of different possibilities and some of those discussions are beginning to take place, and have been for a little while. There are a lot of places in the world where it would be fun to go and celebrate the 50th anniversary. I’m open to a lot of things in light of the remarkable milestone.
Q: Do you prefer a tour or recording a new Beach Boys studio album first…and then going on tour?
ML: I would like to get together with Brian and write some songs together. I have had a few songs rattling around in my brain for a while, and I’m sure he does as well. We’ve always complemented each other incredibly well when we’ve been able to do that. It’s been quite a while since we worked together, but I think his nature and mine are pretty much determined by now and I know there’s a complimentarity [sic] there. I think there’s every possibility that we can get together and do some pretty cool things. There’s the historical part of The Beach Boys’ music, it’s pretty incredible, pretty vast and pretty varied too. … There’s a multitude of things that can be done, but I think it would be really cool to come up with something new, fresh and in the moment in addition to reprising all the great songs that we’re known for.
The complete and unabridged interview with Love appears in the Spring 2011 edition of Endless Summer Quarterly.
