Something for everyone at Mockingbird Station

Over thirty years ago, when I came to Dallas, the mass transit system here barely existed. Fast forward thirty years and we now have a rail system that is quite good and still developing. One of my favorite stations is Mockingbird Station. City planners created what they call a transit-oriented station, along with others, to be an urban hub as well as a rail station. Eat, sleep, drink, play and work all in one place.
The complex includes offices, stores, restaurants, apartments, and a movies theater. What more can you ask? Developers renovated an existing warehouse and office tower left over from the '70's to what we now see at the Mockingbird location.
Not quite at the station, but across the street is theHotel Palomar. One portion is residences and the other is a boutique hotel. This used to be a Hilton and has been completely renovated to a very posh facility. One of the coolest parts of the hotel complex is the old Trader Vics restaurant. In the 90's someone locked the door and preserved this place as if it were a time capsule. If you visited this icon of a restaurant in the 70's or 80's you would swear it is the same, and it is. 90% of the decor in Trader Vics is original. It is as close to time travel we will ever get. The menu is Polynesian and is new and very good.
Back at the station, there are a variety of stores where one can shop. Store include Ann Taylor Loft, Urban Outfitters, Sunglass Hut, The Gap, bittano, American Apparel, Centre, Francesca's Collections, Movida Boutique and Victoria's Secret. Bath and Body Works, Paperie & Co, kidrobot, Index Skateboarding and West Elm round out the selection. A collection of stores that decidedly caters to the young crowd and urban professionals.
The restaurants though, cover the gambit and there is something for everyone. If you want a pub that is full of those urban professionals and music, try Trinity Hall Irish Pub. Margarita Ranch has Mexican food but also, my favorite, grilled quail. Urban Taco bills itself as "Modern Mexican". Reikyu is an excellent sushi bar. My husband says the beef tetaki is the best in town. Vapiano is a new concept in fast food dining meets restaurant chic. Not to be left out, seafood is at Rockfish and ice cream is at Cold Stone Creamery. Top it all off with a Starbucks and there is no need to go anywhere else. There is even a Comedy Club called Hyena's.
Rounding out the entertainment mix is the Angelica Theater. Angelica Theaters specialize in independent films and movies that cater to smaller audiences. They are first run movies, but tend to be eclectic films such as The Young Victoria and A Single Man. The Mockingbird Station Angelica is of the locations hosting this year's Dallas International Film Festival, April 8 - 18.
Don't forget that every DART station has art. Mockingbird station's art was created by Pamela Nelson. It revolves around the Mockingbird icon. Pillars of mosaic are bases for arches topped with mockingbirds perched to greet passengers who take the time to look up. Look down in the elevator and one can see human size bird prints in the tile floor. The walls surrounding the lower platform are ribbons of mosaic providing a sense of movement as the train passes. The design is indicative of the geological layers of the ground behind the retaining walls. Three 300 foot terraces on the other side, as well as the pedestrian walkway, are landscaped with shade tolerant foliage .
It speaks for itself that getting to Mockingbird Station by DART is easy. What is great about the complex is that there is also plenty of parking. There are 735 parking spots for those who want to drive there. In addition, MBS now has FREE valet. No excuses. Getting to Mockingbird Station and finding something to enjoy there is a can't lose proposition for everyone.
