A happy hour after work is long established here. In parts of Italy, they do something similar, an aperitivo. The Italian-owned Hotel Granduca in Uptown Park has just started an aperitivo event each Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 to give Houstonians a chance to experience this civilized Italian tradition in an attractive setting.
Though food at a happy hour is typically an afterthought, when you have an aperitivo or aperitivi, food is a necessity. In Italy, food always accompanies an alcoholic drink order, chips or nuts, at the very least. For an aperitivo, the offerings are bit grander. And, Granduca is offering a buffet of small bites, just for the price of a cocktail. With an acclaimed Italian restaurant, Cavour, in the hotel, you can expect that the food will be much better than the typical bar snacks.
It was when I went to the inaugural aperitivo event three weeks. Prosciutto, arancini, bruschetta, crostini, parmigiano and more were available to complement the cocktails. It was an enjoyable event, and something different. Set around the pool and its cabanas, there were a number of beautiful women in pleasingly tiny skirts and dangerously high Louboutin shoes, older Italian men in stylishly cut sportcoats despite the heat and humidity, and more than a few other tastefully attired, well-healed Italians of all drink-eligible ages. Almost a slice of Italy in Houston.
If you enjoy Italy, the idea of Italy or even just a cocktail, you should give this a try. A refreshing spritz will pair well with our warm weather for a while to come, after all.
