Someone vandalized, started a fire at a Snellville church

Someone vandalized and started a fire at a Snellville church early Friday morning, fire investigators said.

Gwinnett County investigators said they don’t know who started the fire, which was doused by a sprinkler system. And they don’t know why.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of an alarm ringing in the gymnasium-kitchen at Zoar United Methodist Church at 3895 Zoar Church Road, Gwinnett County Fire's spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.

Firefighters arrived to find light smoke inside, and the sprinkler system activated in the kitchen area, Capt. Rutledge said.

The fire was already out when the fire department arrived and was being held-in-check by the sprinkler, Capt. Rutledge said.

The small fire caused minimal fire and smoke damage to the kitchen area of the gymnasium, he said.

“According to investigators, it appears that someone forced entry inside the back of the building and intentionally set a fire in the kitchen area,” Capt. Rutledge said. “There were also signs of slight vandalism found inside the gymnasium as well.”
