The economy is gradually starting to improve.
And this means more job opportunities for people and the possibility of pay increases for those lucky to have a job.
Many of these pay increases will be based on merit. Those individuals who have worked hard can expect pay increases. Those who have not can expect less or no pay increase.
"When I am giving pay raises, I base it on merit," said Paul Engle, a Miami store manager. "I look to reward people who have come to work everyday and helped the store achieve positive results. I am less likely to give pay increases to people who have not worked as hard," said Engle.
Suzanne Woods said as a restaurant manager she rewards people with more lucrative shifts. "A skilled waiter or waitress can earn far more during the evening time period than in the morning. I put those who are doing well on the evening shift so they can earn more," said Woods. She runs a restaurant in Miami.
Jon Parker said as a store manager in Miami, he wants to reward people who have worked hard with pay inceases. "I think people who work hard deserve more money," said Parker.
