Some wintery poems for young children

See also

Winter is almost upon us. And once that first snow falls, little children are eager to get out in the elements and play in the snow. There are so many possibilities for play, like building a snow fort or a snowman or making snow angels. Once they tire of outdoor fun and they come in all rosy-cheeked from the cold and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate, it is a perfect time to read some winter poems. Poetry is also a wonderful way to help yiour child on their way to literacy. Here are a few enjoyable poems from Read Aloud Rhymes for the Very Young selected by Jack Prelutsky.

The Mitten Song
“Thumbs in the thumb-place,
Fingers all together!’
This is the song
We sing in mitten-weather.
When it is cold,
It doesn’t matter whether
Mittens are wool,
Or made of finest leather—
This is the song
We sing in mitten-weather:
“Thumbs in the thumb-place,
Fingers all together.”
~~ Marie Louise Allen

Jack Frost
Someone painted pictures on my
Window pane last night—
Willow trees with trailing boughs
And flowers—frosty white
And lovely butterflies;
But when the morning sun
Touched them with its golden beams,
They vanished one by one!
~~ Helen Bayley Davis

I slip and I slide
On the slippery ice;
I skid and I glide—
Oh, isn’t it nice
To lie on our tummy
And slither and skim
On the slick crust of snow
Where you skid as you swim?
~~ Rhoda W. Bacmeister

It Fell in the City
It fell in the city,
It fell through the night,
And the black rooftops
All turned white.
Red fire hydrants
All turned white
Blue police cars
All turned white.
Green garbage cans
All turned white.
Gray sidewalks
All turned white.
Yellow NO PARKING signs
All turned white
When it fell in the city
All through the night.
~~Eve Merriam
