As a staunch and outspoken proponent of the 2nd Amendment, I have often been asked my position on concealed carry, and if I have a concealed carry permit. The short answer is no. I do not have a concealed carry permit because I don’t believe in concealed carry permits. Allow me to explain.
I firmly believe that we have the right to keep and bear arms. To keep arms is to own them. To bear arms is to carry them. The 2nd Amendment guarantees us that this inalienable right shall not be infringed. Unfortunately, this right has in fact been infringed upon. The requirement of a permit, i.e. permission from the state, to exercise one’s Constitutional right to bear arms is an infringement of that right.
Now, if you have a concealed carry permit, please do not take me the wrong way. I have no problem with anyone obtaining a concealed carry permit, if that is what they feel they need to do. I, however, will not submit to what I view as state-sponsored extortion, and seek the permission of my oh-so benevolent government on bended knee, while paying a tax and meeting arbitrary requirements, to exercise my natural right to bear arms.
I am a wholehearted supporter of people bearing arms. The more people carrying, the better. It has been said that an armed society is a polite society. I believe this to be true, as people are much more likely to remain on their best behavior if they know that they may have to back up any misdeeds and be held accountable against someone who is armed.
In my support for the bearing of arms, I make no distinction between concealed or open carry. I leave that choice to each individual. Some people prefer to carry openly, while others have reasons to keep their weapon concealed. There are pros and cons to each method. My support for the bearing of arms is what is called Constitutional carry. The Constitution has guaranteed us the right to bear arms. It does not explicitly say how.
So, no, I do not have a concealed carry permit. The Constitution is my carry permit. Sometimes, if and when I feel the need to carry, I do so discreetly. That is my choice. It is also your choice. Feel free to do so at your own discretion.
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, nor should this be considered legal advice. Take it however you will. Some localities will frown upon anyone acting upon this viewpoint, and one could easily run afoul of their unconstitutional and unlawful laws. I encourage everyone to use common sense, and think of the bigger picture. We can win this fight eventually, if gun rights advocates use their heads and wisely choose their battles. Until then, carry on.
