Some residents say apartments DNA testing dog poop 'too much'

In Plano, The Northside at Legacy apartment complex has hired a canine DNA company to track resident dogs that can't keep their poop bagged.

PooPrints, Texas specializes in this kind of investigative work and says their client base is growing. They say renters can expect to see this more often in the area, including Fort Worth complexes.

“They’re just giving them a grace period of a month or maybe a week to come in and bring your pet to basically have it swabbed,” owner Cedric Moses told CBS,“What we’ve seen is, when you start hitting people in their pocket they start paying attention, they start understanding."

The process is quite simple. Residents who own dogs allow a mouth swab to go on file. The DNA is then used to match offenders with the poop and a $250 fine is issued by Northside.

Dog owners there are not particularly thrilled about the new policy. One recurring defense owners told CBS 11 News is the area reportedly isn’t particularly well-lit. And after dark it’s sometimes it’s sometimes hard, they say, to know when your dog is going to stop….and go.

Another reisdent commented, “I think it’s a little crazy.”

The Northside at Legacy is owned by a property management company that owns multiple apartment complexes. They are looking into implementing the same policy at more locations.

Dog waste is a common problem at pet-friendly rentals. Not only is it toxic to grass, but it can also contain parasites or leach into ground water. These are good reasons for dog owners to pay attention when their dog goes. And toss it in the trash.
