Recently seeing the classic thrashers Death Angel, and reading "17 Things Local Bands Just Don't Get" by Ari Herstand, his article rings true. Top three things for me were number 6. "Going to shows is most important." Number 10; "Facebook is dying. If your entire promotional plan relies on it, you're doomed". And finally number 16; "No one in the industry cares about how good your music is. They only care about how successful you have become on your own". So let's explore this further.
Number 16. "No one in the industry cares about how good your music is. They only care about how successful you have become on your own". This I know about by being on the other side of the fence. As a fan and a writer, I have heard these things from record labels before. They want to know; what is their following like? Do they go to shows? Are the recognized in public? How often do they play? Did they fill the house? No one ever asked me for a review,(except my editor). No one asks me, how did they sound? They just want to know how many people paid money to see them. People won't pay for something the don't like, or feel like they can't connect.
Number 10. "Facebook is dying. If your entire promotional plan relies on it, you're doomed". This is true as well. Twitter, ReverbNation even MySpace is back. Youtube will be permanent. You have to have a web presence to maintain your fan base. If you can't connect with your fans or don't want too, Hang it up. As the article said you can't keep all of your eggs in the same basket. Doomed might sound like a harsh word, but when all the factors come together in real time this will be the inevitable result.
Number 6. "Going to shows is most important." One time in Oakland in 1990 this writer had the chance to see Slayer and Exodus together. While Thrashing and Moshing around up front, I literally bumped into Mike Muir. Front man of Suicidal Tendencies. While on a break I approached him and introduced myself. I asked him; "How could I run into a big rock star at a show like this?" Mike said; (I'm para-phrasing) I'm a fan first! The first level of music! If you are not a fan, you don't deserve any!"
We were shouting because Exodus was on stage spilling ChemiKill all over the crowd. We ended the conversation by the great big Mike Muir tossing me onto the crowd for some brutal crowd surfing. Good Time's
So locally in Meridian, Krystos, Brutal Season, Mortal Enemy, Latimer, Slain in Silence, KCK, BTG, and others are on the list of bands that get it. And nationally bands like Lord Dying, Blistered Earth, and Halestorm as well as Globals Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Zakk's BLS and many more. I fun way to see success for bands is... The more fun you have the more success you will get. As long as you work hard.
