Considered one of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's greatest masterpieces, "South Pacific" makes a reappearance here, but on this occasion as part of a national tour and not a local production. In recent years both Tulane's Summer Lyric Theatre and Southern Repertory Theatre have presented outstanding productions of this timeless work inspired by stories from James Michener's Pulitzer Prize winning "Tales of the South Pacific," a collection of World War II short stories.
But this is the real deal. This is direct from Broadway and the critically acclaimed 60th anniversary Lincoln Center production. Marcelo Guzzo stars as French expatriate Emile DeBeque while Katie Reid is Navy nurse Lt. Nellie Forbush. Shane Donovan will be featured as Lt. Jack Cable, while aptly-named Christian Marriner will be conniving sailor Luther Billis. Cathy Foy-Mahi will play Bloody Mary, while Hsin-Yu Liao will play her daughter Liat.
With blockbuster songs like "Some Enchanted Evening," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Younger Than Springtime," and "There Ain't Nothin' Like a Dame," the show promises to be one local audiences will treasure for years to come. It is a musical designed to delight all ages, although it is set during a period of war with casualties, so very young children are probably not a good idea.
"South Pacific" opens tonight and plays through Sunday with nightly performances at 8:00 (7:30 p.m. on Sunday night only). Matinees will be held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m.
