We feel personally responsible for this one.
On Friday not only did we tout a wonderful bargain on 2007 Château de Ségriès, Lirac Rouge at Magruders for $12.99 ($1 less than the sale price at Calvert Woodley and Paul’s of Chevy Chase), only to see the store sell out by 6:30pm Friday evening. But we bought the store’s last six bottles!
We felt really bad doing it, not so much because we grabbed the last of the bottles that our readers might come looking for; it was going to happen soon enough, so it might as well be us enjoying the wine (and the bargain). No, we felt bad because Magruder’s typically has good quantities of its advertised sale wines and rarely sells out that quickly. Anyway, the Château de Ségriès Lirac is still on sale at CW and Paul’s through the rest of this week, at least, for only $1 more at $13.99; still a solid bargain at that price.
Paul’s is also celebrating Malbec Madness with some deep discounts on several highly regarded wines from Argentina. Among them is the Bodega NQN "Lonko" Single Vineyard Malbec 2005, which Dave McIntyre writing in The Washington Post rated 3-stars (Outstanding) and called a “Great Value” at $19. Paul’s has it on sale through Saturday at $15.99, a full $2 cheaper than Calvert Woodley’s sale price of $17.99. The Wine Advocate’s Jay Miller also liked this wine and thinks it has some potential to improve with age, rating it 88 points and offering:
“The bouquet offers cedar, spice box, a hint of violets, cola, and black cherry. Medium-bodied with a touch of elegance, the wine has solid depth, savory flavors, enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years, good balance and moderate length. Drink it from 2010 to 2017.”
An equally good Malbec value at Paul’s is the 2006 Luigi Bosca Malbec Single Vineyard Doc Lujan De Cuyo, which scored 91 points from Miller and is also on sale for $15.99, marked down from $21.99. “It is purple-colored with an expressive bouquet of black cherry, mineral, and spice box. On the palate it is both mouth-coating and elegant with plenty of sweet fruit, excellent depth, and a long, pure finish,” Miller wrote in the December issue of The Wine Advocate.
For the more budget conscious among us, La Linda Malbec also from Luigi Bosca and also recommended by The Wine Advocate (with no tasting notes given), is on sale for half the price, at $7.99. Paul’s tasting notes say the wine “shows its characteristic intense red color with aromas of cherry, plum, and spices. On the palate, it shows a well structured texture with very good balance between fruit and the integrated tannins from 3 months aging in French oak. Very smooth and satiny on the finish.”
Hopefully, these wines will be available for the rest of the week.
