Some days in the Beatles' lives: April 7 -- Roll up for the Mystery Tour

Beatles and Beatle-related events on April 7:

Highlight:
  • April 7, 1967: While filming Jane taking a walk, Paul McCartney comes up with the idea for "Magical Mystery Tour."

The hourlong film, which first aired Dec. 26, 1967 in the UK, was pretty much a Beatles' home movie-type project with an informal script. Victor Spinetti, who'd appeared with the Beatles in "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!", had a role in this film as well. Critics called it the Beatles' first bomb. In England, the film music was released in a double EP package with a book with the tracks "Magical Mystery Tour," "The Fool on the Hill," "Blue Jay Way," "Flying," "Your Mother Should Know" and "I Am the Walrus." In the U.S., however, Capitol Records released the music as a full-size album, putting the soundtrack on side one and fleshing it out with five more tracks on side two: "Hello, Goodbye," "Penny Lane," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "All You Need Is Love" and "Baby You're a Rich Man." The album was later released in the UK as well. Though never formally aired in the U.S. as it was in the UK, it is available on DVD
