It has been one week since Stephen Hawking appeared on “Larry King Live” to discuss the book which he and Leonard Mlodinow wrote, “The Grand Design.” In a past article, this Examiner was promoting what he thought was going to be a debate between Father Robert Spitzer and renowned physicist, Dr. Stephen Hawking. He apologizes for unintentionally misleading, because in his opinion it was more of an interview of Dr. Hawking by Larry King, followed by a discussion with a panel of guests.
One of these guests was Leonard Mlodinow, co author of, “The Grand Design.” The other two guests were Father Robert Spitzer whose You Tube video, “The Curious Metaphysics of Dr. Stephen Hawking”, was linked to in a previous article, and “New Age” proponent Deepak Chopra.
According to Dr. Hawking (via the September 10, 2010 episode of “Larry King Live”), God is not needed to explain how something can come from nothing, and science can explain how this occurred. In the discussion after the interview with Dr. Hawking, Fr. Spitzer commented that he was glad to hear of Dr. Hawking’s (or was it Mlodinow’s or even both of their?) openness to the idea of a Creator, given that the idea that something can come from nothing without a Creator was problematic. Having made a related comment in a past article himself, this Examiner concurs with Fr. Spitzer.
According to Dr. Hawking (if this Examiner's notes on the September 10, 2010 episode of “Larry King Live” are correct), he sets out to answer the questions of where the universe came from, and why the laws of nature are as they are (being finely tuned.) Indeed, these are questions that inquiring minds want to know. To the mind of this Examiner, these questions are only answered by the existence of a Creator.
Listening to the discussion after King’s interview of Dr. Hawking when Leonard Mlodinow and Deepak Chopra seemed to be in agreement with the thesis put forward in “The Grand Design”, this Examiner (despite the fact that both men seemed to be likeable and decent fellows who are no doubt created in the image of God) was reminded of the words of Holy Writ:
“They are of the world: therefore of the world they speak, and the world heareth them.” (1 John 4:5.)[1]
Now granted, the argument can be made that anyone can make the claim put forth by the author of 1 John and use it to back up their beliefs. However, the claims made by just “anyone” cannot be subjected to the intense scrutiny to which the Christian Faith has been put to and still hold up. In the mind of this Examiner, it is the best possible explanation for the reality in which man find’s himself.
