Solvang: Merlot Taste-Off: A Merlot Celebration

Buttonwood will be featuring this Merlot at the Solvang: Merlot Taste-Off!

Demystifying the connotation the award winning movie Sideways gave to Merlot, the town of Solvang is celebrating the movie’s 10-year anniversary with Sideways in Solvang: Merlot Taste-Off! The event will be held on September 13, 2014 in the garden courtyard of the Solvang Festival Theater.

While Sideways gave Merlot a negative name, it did put Santa Barbara wine country on the map changing the atmosphere of towns like Solvang, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, Los Alamos and Lompoc. Solvang has become a more eclectic town featuring many wine tasting rooms and wine bars which did not exist before the movie’s release in September of 2004. Even the culinary scene has changed. Now visitors can enjoy the Danish inspiration this town exudes but also the fabulous wineries and tasting rooms that are sprawled in and around the town.

The Solvang Conference & Visitors Bureau is sponsoring the Merlot Taste-Off. Proceeds from the event will benefit the non-profit Solvang Festival Theater, a wonderful outdoor theater that presents some great theatrical performances and concerts including the PCPA Theaterfest’s summer productions, which is a delightful experience sitting under the stars and a must when visiting Solvang during the summer season. The Solvang Festival Theater is celebrating their 40th year of supporting the performing arts in Solvang.

Merlot is a grape varietal that is known for its deep blue grapes giving the wine a dark purple color. The wines are typically full bodied with a soft lush velvety quality and texture that displays flavors of plum and black fruits.

The Merlot Taste-Off will feature samplings of Merlot from the following wineries: Baehner Fournier, Buttonwood, Carivintas, Core, Dascomb, Happy Canyon Vineyard, J. Ludlow, Lions Peak, Lucas & Lewellen, Point Concepcion, Sagebrush Annies, Sevtap and Sunstone. Accompanying the wines will be gourmet appetizers from local restaurants.

If you are a lover of the Merlot or a real wine connoisseur you will not want to miss this wine tasting. Join this writer in discovering what makes the Merlot of Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang spectacular.
