Solstice celebration this Sunday

This coming Sunday, December 18, at 7:00 pm, the First Unitarian Church of San Jose invites the community to "Light Returning," a ceremony and celebration of the Winter Solstice to be held in the historic sanctuary at 160 North Third Street, across from St. James Park in San Jose. The service will feature music, the Alegría singers, readings, snacks, and much more. This celebration is open to all.

Solstice, from the Latin for "sun standing still" marks the point at which the sun reaches its furthest position in the north or south and begins moving back in the other direction. It is a moment in time and one of many phenomena connecting the earth, moon, sun, stars, water, fire, air and the rest of our world. We all experience this connection to everything around us. 'Light Returning' is the honoring and celebration of this richness we have in the natural world as we move through the cycles and seasons together. 'Light Returning' is also a recognition of change, that can be expressed poetically, musically and with movement as well as in ceremony, gathering in a circle and singing and dancing together. These expressive elements help us to move into an experience of community bonding and a major component in my sense of worship. Music is a wonderful vehicle for joining with one another and a delightful opportunity to express our joy in life through the act of singing together.
