Solon girls track looking for state championship repeat

See also

Anyone who is familiar with Solon or has kids going to the Solon schools knows how competitive their sports teams are. The football team is a perennial playoff team, with a state finals appearance in 2000. Their wrestling teams are always good, as they just sent three wrestlers to the state tournament. The girls basketball team just completed a run where they went to four straight regional finals. The future looks bright for Solon athletics, especially in the next few years for the baseball team, which carries seven sophomores and two freshmen on the varsity roster. The boys and girls soccer teams are very good, and have a chance to do some special things come the fall. In one sport at Solon, the future is NOW, and judging on what they did last year, folks in Solon and around the Cleveland area should perk up and start giving this team the credit they deserve.

Girls Track and Field

What? Not football?....No, people. In Solon, the Girls Track and Field squad in the best team at the school, and has the hardware to prove it. Last season, the Comets stormed onto the scene, and obliterated the field in Columbus, winning the Division I state championship by almost doubling the point output of the second place team.

How is that for making a statement?

Last season, the Comets were led by their "Big 3" of Therese Haiss, Jelvon Butler, and Alexis Gray. Haiss handled the distance running, Butler the sprints, and Gray the field events. While Haiss is currently at the University of Oregon, Butler and Gray return for their senior seasons. While there may not be a third person to fill the "Big 3", this year's Comet team may actually have more depth than last season's team. More depth means more points, and more points make it very difficult to be beaten in a meet.

Solon qualified four relay teams in Columbus last season. Of those 16 runners that competed in those four relays, 14 of them return this season

Jelvon Butler.... The Comets are led by this UCLA bound senior. Butler was part of four events last season in Columbus, and scored in them all, including a 2nd place finish in the 100 meters, and a 1st place finish in the 4x200 meter relay. She got her season off to a fine start last weekend at the Maralyn H. West Invitational at Collinwood. She won the 100 and 200, and was part of the winning 4x200 meter relay

Alexis Gray.... Gray placed in the top five last year in Columbus in both the shot put and discus. Also an accomplished golfer and basketball player, Gray also had herself quite a weekend at Collinwood. She cruised to wins in both the shot put and discus.

Geneva Sandridge and Louisa Wise.... Sandridge, a junior, and Wise, a sophomore, are part of the distance runner group looking to replace the scoring of Therese Haiss. I think they are doing just fine so far.Last weekend at Collinwood, Sandridge won the 800, and placed third in the 3,200. Wise won the 1,600 by a whopping 14 seconds. Sandridge and Wise were both part of the winning 4x800 meter relay team that won by a mind boggling 37 seconds. 37 SECONDS! THAT IS THE LENGTH OF A TV COMMERCIAL!

Solon athletes also won the high jump, long jump, and pole vault, making it a clean sweep of the field events.

With winning the state title last season, and off to a roaring start so far this year, how does the coach keep the team motivated and not looking forward to Columbus this early in the season? In a quote to Northeast Ohio Media Group, coach Brian Sabol answers that question:

We want to improve in every event. We want to get stronger as the season goes on......Solon head coach Brian Sabol

Improve in every event?

That's a scary thought

What the Girls Track and Field team at Solon really is, is fun to watch. They are competitive at almost every event, and just seem to roll up the points.

Exactly what is needed for a team to repeat as state champions
