Just minutes ago, authorities identified the Soldier who barricaded herself in an office building at Fort Lee Monday morning and then fatally shot herself in the head. Fort Lee officials identified her as Sgt. 1st Class Paula M. Walker, 33, of Yonkers, New York.

Walker is a 14-year veteran of the Army and had been at Fort Lee for the last three years.

Police accounts indicate Walker became enraged over some unknown incident early Monday while at the Virginia Army base. She reportedly began throwing objects around an office before turning a gun on herself. Officials indicate the weapon used was not her service weapon.

Sgt. First Class Walker was transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center immediately after the shooting where she was pronounced dead. No one else was injured in the incident although there were more than 1,000 people inside the four-story building at the time of the shooting.

Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lyons said officials did not know whether Walker was being treated for any mental health issues. An autopsy will be performed. Toxicology results won’t be complete for about six weeks.

There was no immediate information on Walker’s deployment history.

The shooting is the fourth violent act at a Virginia military installation this year.
