A specially trained German Shepherd that attacked and mauled to death a six-year-old boy in Oak Grove, Kentucky on Sunday has been euthanized.
The child and his family were visiting the home of a Fort Campbell Soldier who used the dog for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
According to police reports, the dog attacked the boy in the yard of the home.
No names have been released of either the child or the dog's owner.
The child was life-flighted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
This is a tragic story that has left more questions than answers. Everyone is grieving.
Examiner’s Note: Working dogs of every breed still need supervision. They are not pets.
PTSD dogs are specifically trained to be hyper-sensitive to their Soldier; to wake them up in the case of night terrors and to be their support and warning mechanism in the event of a seizure. These dogs are there to ease stress and provide comfort, but they are still on-the-job.
These dogs come with a price-tag of approximately $30,000. There can no value on the life of this child.
In my opinion, everyone tragically failed this child and this dog.
