The following article is part of an ongoing effort to help homeless dogs in and around the Toronto/Hamilton area find suitable and loving homes. Sometimes this effort extends even further, since there are so many dogs that find themselves in dire circumstances. Currently, the need is great but the homes are few. Your help is desperately needed.
Loyal Rescue of Peterborough, Ontario (east of Toronto) recently took in a little Chihuahua named Sokki (1077).
Sokki is approximately 7 ½ years old and weighs in at just 8 ½ lbs. She is a timid girl who came from a puppy mill in Kentucky where she gave birth to a litter. She was scheduled to be euthanized but Loyal Rescue decided to take her in, thus saving her life.
She was badly treated before her long trip to Ontario but her future now looks much brighter. Her foster family in Omemee, Ontario has been patient with her and earned her trust, so much so that Sokki will now beg to be picked up and cuddled.
“Sokki arrived here at the end of January as a terrified and traumatized little dog,” said her foster mom. “At first I wondered if she could ever be rehabilitated because she would bolt if I tried to approach her and if I tried to stroke her, her skin on her back just crawled. Hands obviously had never been objects of kindness for her.
Her foster mom added that with patience and time, Sokki began to trust her.
“You can imagine how good it felt the first time she climbed onto my knees and allowed me to pet her.”
She added that it seems like this little girl is now making up for lost time taking in all the attention and affection she can get! But it will be difficult for Sokki to adjust to any new owners. They must be quiet and gentle folks who can take the time to get to know her and acquire her trust. She gets along well with children and other dogs.
“She probably would be fine alone during the day but it would be better if she had company. Another little four-legged friend who would act as a model would also be an asset. While here, she loved to snuggle with her friend, Gracie - another little Chihuahua that she came in with - so it would be nice if she could find another companion with whom to share the rest of her life.”
Sokki likes to go for walks, is crate trained, spayed, is up-to-date on her routine shots and doing well with her housetraining. She truly needs and deserves a second chance in life. If you feel you can give her that, contact Loyal Rescue by email at info@loyalrescue and put “Pet Inquiry: Sokki 1077 PFId#20739952’ in the subject line.
