There is a newer art museum in the Sacramento area. It is called the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum. It is named after one of the few African American women of the past antebellum south who made a difference in the lives of her people. It is meant to be a multicultural museum for adults and children to enjoy and explore their own cultures and arts.
"The vision of SOJO is to produce a well-educated, aware, and socially responsible community committed to sharing our cultural histories and legacies while bettering our community through the arts." They have more than 2000 linear feet which are covered with dynamic murals covering the diverse peoples of the various cultures of California and Sacramento in particular. This celebrates the cultures of African American, Mexican, Latino, Asian, Alaskan, Pacific Islander, and Native American. The mural is meant for visitors to encounter history and art in their journey through the museum which also displays the works of art by local artists as well as international ones.
There are also workshops for children and summer camps to explore the experience of creating from their own cultures. These allow the children to see their own culture as well as others cultures without prejudice. There are special events for the different cultures and or exhibits throughout the year to continue the concentration towards a convergence of the arts of the multicultural state of California in Sacramento.
